Welcome to the Library: Downtown Campus Library

Welcome Book

Downtown Campus Library

The Downtown Campus Library is a vibrant community. We are centrally located, on five major bus routes, in close proximity to the University of Arizona, Tucson’s downtown district, and I-10, which wraps around Tucson’s west and south sides. Our campus offers transfer courses and is the main campus for ESL, Paralegal, Translation and Interpretation programs. DC also has the Applied Technology programs: Automotive, Building Construction, Welding, Machine Tool, CAD, and Mechatronics (AIS). The DC Library follows the Learning Commons model: share our space with the computer commons, Learning Center, and student IT help desk so we can easily assist when you are working on any assignment. We are here to help you succeed!

Meet the Downtown Campus Library Team

Emily Besich, Library Department Head

Hi! I love helping with citation and formatting quandaries, showing how to use our wonderful website, and guiding people to just the right resource in our library collection. I have been a Pima employee since 2016; I currently work at the Downtown Campus.

I'm a Tucson native who loves exploring our city, browsing estate sales, and making food and craft projects at home.

My first priority is helping PCC students, faculty, and staff. Reach out at any time--I am here for you!

You can email me at: ebesich@pima.edu

Joe Brewer, Librarian

If you are a student, my job is to help you with your research projects. I'm interested in all kinds of topics, so I love this job!  Please email me when you get a research assignment, or just to introduce yourself or ask a question.

I grew up in Colorado, but also in Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Since my college years, I've been in Arizona and New Mexico. When I was a kid, I dreamed of directing movies or acting; later I was interested in teaching. Eventually I became a librarian, where I deal with all these topics (and many more) through, books, videos, and the internet. I've worked as a librarian at NAU in Flagstaff and at the University of Arizona.

This summer, I traveled to the hilly and green city of Lawrence, KS to visit extended family. I've also been reading classic books and discussing them with others in seminars. We've read poems by Emily Dickinson; plays by Shakespeare; a work of political philosophy by John Stuart Mill; and I'm starting to read the science fiction novel Kindred by Oliva Butler. What are you reading. viewing, writing, or making? Email me:  jbrewer@pima.edu

Kathline Gomes, Librarian

Hi! I joined PCC in December 2022, and I’m happy to be here. I split my time between the West Campus and Downtown Campus libraries – say hi if you see me around! I have a background in education and was a teacher and school librarian before transitioning to the college library. I love promoting our amazing library resources (books! laptops! hotspots! study rooms! culture passes! helpful library folks!) and supporting students with research. Outside of work, I like to spend time in nature, play games, read, and bake. As a new Tucson resident, I’m enjoying getting to know the area through bird watching and eating a lot of delicious food. If you need help with a class assignment (or if you have restaurant recommendations!), you can reach me at kgomes@pima.edu.

Saudra Alvarez, Library Services Specialist

I have been working with Pima Community College for 5 years and previously worked at the Pima County Public Library. I'm a parent of 3 boys and currently work full-time and I'm a part-time student at the University of Arizona.

Being a student myself, it is important to assist our students and patrons the best we can and I absolutely enjoy working here knowing that we all work together to ensure student's success on a daily basis. I provide circulation services and some reference services as needed. I'm currently the student aide supervisor and responsible for our collection maintenance, creating lists, inventory, Downtown Campus library newsletter, and I work on our DC-library social media. I've learned so much in the last 4 years and hope to continue to learn and grow through the years to come while continuing to provide great services to our faculty, staff, students, and community users.

During my free time, I enjoy hikes with the family and explore the outdoors. I also use my free time to study as I am currently pursuing my BA in Information Science and eSociety.

I can be reached at sbmarroquin@pima.edu

Teresa Dodge, Library Services Specialist

Although I’m not a native Tucsonan, I went to school here from elementary through college and graduated from the UofA with a BA in Elementary Education. I have worked in four different types of libraries since 2001: public, middle school, prison, and now academic. (Trivia question answer: Yes, I was a student library clerk at the same middle school I attended and later worked at.)

I have four kids, and several adorable grandchildren. I like to garden, I have several cats, and enjoy photographing the desert landscapes around Tucson. Fall is my favorite season and I always look  forward to cool-weather hiking in our beautiful desert and around Mt. Lemmon. I can be reached at: tdodge1@pima.edu

Amber Arvizu, Library Services Specialist

I am a Tucson native who is a mariachi and can play all kinds of different instruments, including the guitar, vihuela, and harp. I also enjoy reading, going on fishing trips, and enjoying the outdoor life. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in May 2020 and graduating during COVID was one of the saddest moments of my life. Class of 2020 didn't get a chance to walk onstage, however, I am proud to be the first to graduate with a BA in General Studies with an emphasis in Science, Technology, Art, and Society.
I applied to PCC because this is the facility I grew up in and have many relatives who worked or currently working for PCC. I am the third generation to become part of the PCC family; my mom was a financial aid specialist at the East campus for many years and even worked at Desert Vista and Community College. My grandmother worked as a Student Advisor at the West campus and would organize beautiful events promoting mariachi, folkorico, or generally Hispanic/Latino culture at the West campus.
I love PCC and can't wait to see what this adventure has in store for me!

You can reach me at: aarvizu17@pima.edu

Mark Willet, Library Technician

My name is Mark Willett and I am happy to be joining the Downtown campus team as a library technician! I am a recent graduate of the University of Arizona's MA LIS program and also have a background in History and Museum Studies. I am a big fan of a variety of literature from the 20th century and earlier, particularly science fiction, fantasy and horror novels, in addition to more recent nonfiction books about history, anthropology and world cultures. I look forward to helping Pima students and other users accomplish their research goals, as well as doing my part to maintain the library space as a safe, fun and effective environment for learning, research and recreation.
