What is evidence based practice?

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)

Evidence-based practice is clinical practice in which patient management decisions are consistent with the principles of evidence-based health care. This means that decisions will be, first of all, consistent with the best evidence about the benefits and downsides of the alternative management strategies. Second, decisions will be consistent with the values and preferences of the individual patient.                                                                        ----JAMAevidence Glossary

PICO Resources

PICO is an acronym used to help structure clinical research questions, especially in evidence-based practice. It stands for:

  • PATIENT/POPULATION: Who is the patient or population you are interested in? This could be a specific group of people based on age, gender, disease, or condition.

  • INTERVENTION: What is the intervention or exposure you are considering? This could be a treatment, procedure, diagnostic test, or even a lifestyle change.

  • COMPARISON: What is the main alternative to the intervention? This could be a placebo, a different treatment, or no intervention at all (e.g., standard care or waitlist).

  • OUTCOME: What is the desired outcome or effect you are measuring? This could include improvements in health, such as reduced symptoms, survival rates, or quality of life.
