2022-2023 Winners
The Library is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022-23 Library Research Scholarship Award. The Award is designed to recognize and reward exemplary library research skills. Students submit a research paper or presentation that they have completed for a PCC course together with reflections on their process. Librarians review the submissions, looking for evidence of excellent research skills and strong information literacy. Information literacy is one of PCC’s General Education Learning Outcomes and an information literate student possesses crucial skills to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
Winners, listed alphabetically below, are each awarded $500 scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year.
Teresa Billick Teresa's contributions to an ambitious group project on sustainable communities for her Honors 101 course with instructor, Dr. Kenneth Vorndran, were focused in two distinct areas: education as one powerful tool to address the deeply connected issues of climate change and poverty and ideas for systemic change to support affordable housing options. She used a variety of types of relevant source material including scholarly articles and popular magazine and newspaper articles from the Library and selected high quality sources from the freely available web. She attributed the work of others clearly and consistently throughout her writing, demonstrating her understanding of the ethical use of information.
Jose Castro Jose's winning paper on the topic of open borders was written for instructor Elizabeth Gaxiola's Mexican American Studies 219 course. Jose's reflections on his process demonstrated his skills at evaluating the credibility of his sources and defining his information need. He discussed using the Library database, Opposing Viewpoints, and coming to the realization that the inclusion of arguments that are critical of your thesis can strengthen your case. Jose's paper did an exemplary job of integrating data and research in support of his thesis.
