Makerspace in the Curriculum

Makerspaces allow students to brainstorm, protype, test, and iterate. In that interative cycle you can find making literacies or competencies can be integrated in your courses. Examples of these are:

  • Apply design-level thinking to meet needs and/or solve problems
  • Assesses the availability of tools & materials
  • Assembles effective teams
  • Demonstrates time management best-practices
  • Demonstrates understanding of the basics of 3D Printing
  • Designs or redesigns a 3D printed object in order to express an idea or emotion and/or solve a problem
  • Identifies the need to invent, design, fabricate, build, repurpose or repair some “thing” in order to express an idea or emotion, or to solve a problem
  • Improve soft skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, self-motivation, time management, creativity and problem-solving
  • Produce individual and team projects showing basic competency in common makerspace technologies
  • Understands many of the ethical, legal and socio-economic issues surrounding making

Making and use of creative technologies have been incorporated into higher educational curriculum around the world. 

  • Creating a 3D digital maquette for a sculpture in art
  • Printing 3D printing molecules for identification and comparison in biology
  • Building 3D models in calculus to visualize volume
  • Creating anthropological artifacts that explain an aspect of human behavior
  • Designing a memorial for a forgotten or underappreciated moment in history
  • Laser cutting parts for an engineering ball launcher project 
  • Recording a podcast that reviews an event or theme in history
