3D printers
The Makerspace uses two types of printers - FDM and SLA. FDM or Fused Deposition Modeling is an additive manufacturing method using melted plastic called filament laid down in layers to create a three dimensional object. Printing with filament starts with a 3D file model in .STL or .OBJ formats. Those files are run through a slicer program that creates a G-code that in turn tells the machine how to print the object. SLA or resin printers use a vat of liquid resin which is cured by UV light layer by layer forming a 3D object. Resin prints are rinsed with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to remove resin residue and then are cured in UV light. Resin prints are good for prints with fine details. When using 3D printers, users must:
Use nitrile gloves, goggles and masks when in the Resin Printing room to protect skin, eyes and breathing from resin and alcohol fumes. PPE are provided.
