Tips on Overcoming Test Anxiety

Keep in mind that all of us experience some level of anxiety before and during exams.  A little anxiety helps us focus, but too much anxiety can affect one’s performance.

Things you can do to prepare for a test and reduce anxiety:

  • Be prepared by learning the material thoroughly.
    • Stay up-to-date on assignments.
    • Learn material and review as you go along, not at the last minute.
  • Never cram for a test. Prepare for the exam ahead of time.
  • Learn whether you study better with or without friends.
  • Know when to stop studying.
  • Read for mastery rather than memory.  Just reading test material is not enough.
  • Work on the easiest portions of the test first.  Do not get bogged down nor worry about questions you don’t know.
  • Preview the test before you answer anything.
  • Take care of yourself: sleep, eat well, and exercise.
  • Dress comfortably and in layers for tests.
  • Think good thoughts.  Positive and appreciative people do better on tests.
  • Read the directions carefully.
  • Ask the instructor to explain any test items or directions that are not clear.
  • Avoid arriving too early or late to the exam.
  • Avoid listening to others or discussing the exam with others, while you’re waiting for the exam.
  • Tense and relax different muscle groups to help reduce body tension.
  • Do not rush through a test. Attempt to work at a comfortable pace.  Use all of the time allotted.
  • Reward yourself when you are finished with the exam. Do not dwell on your mistakes.
