Welcome to Pima Community College Library's Black Lives Matter Resource list! This LibGuide will help you to find library resources that explore race and racism in history and in current culture. All books & films are linked to their catalog records so you can easily see if they're available online, or, in the case of physical copies, which campus has them and whether or not they are currently available. Online resources like streaming films and ebooks are only available to current students, faculty, & staff with a MyPima username and password from off campus. Most online resources linked are available to any patron to access on campus via a College computer. This is not a comprehensive list of all related resources at Pima, but instead highlights specific titles. If you are looking for a specific book not listed please search for it in our catalog.

- Black Lives Matter#BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.
- Black Lives Matter Comics Reading ListsComic books have always been political. They are both a reflection and a barometer of our times. From the first appearance of Captain America in March 1941 punching the face of Hitler, to recent titles like I am Alfonso Jones and MARCH - titles tackling police brutality, #BlackLivesMatter, and the life story of Congressman John Lewis - comic books have been and continue to be vitally important avenues to visually tell our stories, to share our histories, and to show experiences and multiple perspectives while engaging both sides of our brain.
- Key Events in Black Higher EducationFor most of American history, a majority of the Black population in this country was prohibited from learning to read or write. Today millions of African Americans are enrolled in higher education. Here are some key events that occurred along the way from The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education.
- Black Lives Matter CapsuleA self-guided platform to actively honor Black Lives. Today, and every day, all Black Lives Matter. Black, White, and non-Black people of color are all diminished by systemic, anti-Black racism. - The Coretta Scott King Book AwardsThe Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. The award commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.

- Confronting Prejudice: How to Protect Yourself and Help Others"Confronting Prejudice: How to Protect Yourself and Help Others" published by Pepperdine University's online Master of Psychology program. The purpose of this resource is to educate readers on the prevalence of prejudice and implicit bias in society, including information about what marginalized groups are most likely to be harmed by prejudice. The resource features information about how one can be an ally and an advocate for change, as well as how people experiencing discrimination can build resilience against these types of behaviors.
- Black Mental Health MattersSadly just 1/3 of Black people receive the help they need. For some, longstanding racism has hurt their economic prospects and their ability to access affordable, high-quality mental health assistance. Other African Americans are afraid of the stigmas regarding mental illnesses and treatment. But not finding help can make mental illnesses even worse. One of our goals is to help people find the assistance they need when they need it.
- Airbnb while Black: How to avoid racism while travelingThere is an appreciation for Airbnb and other companies that have chosen to stand in solidarity and address the issues of racial injustice and white supremacy. However, with #AirbnbWhileBlack still actively being used on social media by Black travelers who have put their trust in the company to provide them with a safe travel experience, there may still be questions regarding the effectiveness of Airbnb’s policies.
- Scaffolded Anti-Racist ResourcesThis is a working document for scaffolding anti-racism resources. The goal is to facilitate growth for white folks to become allies, and eventually accomplices for anti-racist work. These resources have been ordered in an attempt to make them more accessible.
