Copyright and Intellectual Property: Plagiarism

Includes Annual notice to students regarding peer-to-peer sharing, alternative media services and copyright resources

Why Cite?

Citing a source is important for many reasons. Four of the main reasons are:

  • It shows the reader that you did your research well by citing reliable and credible sources
  • A scholar gives credit to others who did research by acknowledging their ideas
  • To avoid plagiarism, you should cite words or ideas that are not your own; use quotes is you are copying words or ideas exactly, but also cite if  you paraphrased their words and ideas
  • It allows others who read your research to find the sources you used;  give complete and full citations in your paper or presentation with in text citations, followed by a Works Cited (MLA), Reference (APA), or Bibliography (Chicago) section.

And remember, you don't just cite your source in papers, but also in oral presentations!
