Citing AI Sources

Citing generative AI sources in MLA format follows this format:

"Text of prompt” prompt. ChatGPT*, Day Month version, OpenAI*, Day Month Year, chat.openai.com*.

*If you are using a different AI than ChatGPT, replace the AI source name, the publisher, and the URL (all marked with asterisks) with the relevant information.

Example MLA Works Cited entry: “Explain antibiotics” prompt. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 16 Feb. 2023, chat.openai.com.

Example MLA in-text citation: ("Explain antibiotics")

You can also try asking Chat GPT to cite itself in MLA format! After entering your prompt, ask Chat GPT to "cite chat GPT in MLA format" and it will usually cite the prompt you asked it!
