HOW TO LOCATE THIS GUIDE

WHAT TO DRINK?

 

  • HYDRATE! (um . . . . sorry for yelling)

  • Water best/avoid ice-cold drinks

  • Other non-caffeinated beverages

    • flavored/infused water
    • herb tea
    • diluted fruit juice
  • Avoid alcohol, carbonated drinks, heavily sugared drinks

  • Avoid fatty dairy

    • Point: causes excessive mucus production (Gates, Forrest & Obert)

    • Counterpoint: does not cause excessive mucus (Mayo Clinic)

TREAT YOUR VOICE KINDLY

Basically, BE KIND & GENTLE

 

  • Get vocal rest

  • Keep it natural, avoid "special effects"

  • Avoid clearing your throat - if you do, break the habit

  • Instead:

    • Sip water/liquids

    • GROSS-OUT ALERT: inhale vigorously, hard swallow

  • Medical issues for medical attention:

    • Chronic hoarseness

    • Chronic laryngitis

    • Acid reflux (stomach acid corrosive to vocal cords)

WHAT TO EAT?

  • High water-content foods like salad vegetables, fruits, soups, etc.

  • Avoid high sodium foods

  • Avoid peanut butter, chocolate (excessive mucus production to digest)

  • Avoid hot, spicy foods (dehydration & mucus removal from throat)

  • Avoid very dry foods right before (crackers, nuts, popcorn, etc.)

  • Medications can cause dryness, irritation

    • Cold/allergy medication

    • Nasal sprays

    • Antibiotics

    • Pain relievers

    • Sleep aids

    • Many others
