Citing Within Your Speech

You must document (cite) the source whenever you directly quote or paraphrase another's idea.

Remember that a source citation within your speech is a reference to or quotation from material you have gathered during your research and an acknowledgement of the source. For example, within your speech you might say: "As Charles Becker said in the Janurary 2, 1987, edition of the Arizona Daily Star." Cite your sources and give credit where it is due.

Researching for Your Speech

This guide is intended as a starting place for research for CMN 110.

The above tabs are arranged to guide you through the steps of the research process.  They'll lead you to reference tools for basic background information, library books for a more in-depth look at your topic, journal articles, and additional links to help you to write your paper and cite your sources, such as...

  • How to choose and search the library's article databases.
  • How to find books and other materials using the library catalog.
  • How to distinguish between credible and non-credible sources on the web.
  • Selecting and narrowing a topic.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact your friendly neighborhood librarian.
