WRT 101S - Downtown (Graham) Writing I: Introduction

For Essay #3: Documented argument

Read me first!

Welcome!  This research guide will you help you choose a topic and do research for your documented essay.

This guide is being used by many different instructors who teach this course.  Your instructor will give you specific instructions about your assignment.

Notice the following tabs for this guide.  Each focuses on a different approach to the documented essay:

A: Good career match?

B: Controversy in a career

C: Good community for me?

D: Controversy & communities

Depending upon your instructor, you may be asked to choose one of these, or you may be assigned a specific one.

Remember, your instructor calls the shots and he or she may revise these instructions to fit your assignment.

Each tab is divided into about five stages.  Each stage gives you directions within a box.  For example, one stage may focus on exploring possible topics, while a later stage helps you search for sources.

  • Take time to read the directions carefully.
  • When you have finished one stage, continue with the next one--when appropriate.
  • When MegaSearch is discussed, you may be given a link to a hidden tab for more detailed directions.  At any time, you can easily return to your topic tab by clicking it at the top.
